Resources for Sexual Purity

June 26, 2010

We’ve been working through our sermon series on 1 Thessalonians.  Tomorrow we come to 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 – This is the Will of God, Your Sanctification.

Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Verses 3-8 deal specifically with the issue of sexual purity, a topic that is very relevant for today.  Though we’ll do our best to be faithful to the passage, a lot more could be said on the subject.  Therefore, in addition to the sermon which can be found on our website, I wanted to include resources to further encourage you toward your sanctification in sexual purity.

The first resource I’d point you to is the Sexual Issues page on the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation website.  There are numerous articles and audio messages on various issues pertaining to sexual purity.  Two links on this site of particular usefulness are: 1. “Sex Before Marriage: How Far Is Too Far?” by Tim Lane, and 2. “Sex in the City, Suburbs, and Countryside: Maintaining Purity in a Sex-obsessed Culture” by Ed Welch.

Another useful website is Sexual Purity page of Desiring God.  There are tons of articles, sermons, lectures, and even a free on-line book: Sex and the Supremacy of Christ.  On resource on this site that is particularly helpful is ANTHEM: Strategies for Fighting Lust.  This article gives biblical, practical approaches to battle for sexual purity.

Another book I’d recommend is “Sex Is Not the Problem, Lust Is”  by Joshua Harris.  The list could go on and on, but these resources are a good start to putting to death what is earthly in us.  Let us take seriously God’s will for our sexual purity and seek to help one another fight the good fight of faith.
