Proverbs Regarding Wealth: Everything from getting it to spending it to passing it on.

January 17, 2015

In this day and age, that is a dangerous title.  By it I do not mean to suggest that these Proverbs are a how-to manual for acquiring prosperity from God.  For my thoughts on that, see the three part mini-series from Proverbs 3:1-12, The Prosperity of Wisdom from October 12-26, 2014 (especially part 3).  No, the reason for this entry is simply to help us to grasp all that God says to us about wealth, money, and possessions from the book of Proverbs.

This list started as a personal note as I was preparing to preach on Wisdom for Financial Agreements from Proverbs 6:1-5, but as I was jotting down the references and making small summations, I thought it might be profitable for you to study them as well.  This is an imperfect list.  The summaries are fallible and idiosyncratic.  There are more proverbs that could be added categorically, such as those on hard work, diligence, or envy.  Nevertheless, it is still a good list for understanding proverbial wisdom regarding wealth.  At the end, there’s a list of financial themes that Tremper Longman III compiled for his Baker Exegetical Commentary on the Old Testament Wisdom and Psalms.

I would encourage you to sit down with your Bible and read through them all.  Don’t just take my silly summation for it.  For the sake of space, I have uploaded the list as a pdf.  Simply click here to read Proverbs Regarding Wealth.  Enjoy and may God give us a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of how He wants us to use our wealth.
